9-Year-Old Suspended For Saying ‘Merry Christmas’ To Teacher

(This Post is Satire)  San Francisco, CA — The ‘war on Christmas’ continues as a simple well-wishing of ‘Merry Christmas’ has led to big trouble for one fourth-grade San Francisco boy this week.

Timothy Dawson, a 9-year-old student at Argon Elementary School in San Francisco, CA., was in the school cafeteria Monday eating with friends when he was taken to the principal’s office and given a week-long suspension. His punishment was consequence for saying ‘Merry Christmas’ to his homeroom teacher earlier that morning.

Dawson’s teacher, 35-year-old Paul Horner who is an outspoken Atheist, was offended at the students display of Christmas spirit and had staff suspend the young boy for the rest of the week.

“I say ‘Merry Christmas’ to everyone,” the boy told CNN. “I didn’t think it would cause so much trouble just for saying a couple little words.”

The boy’s mother, Laura Dawson, 41, was fuming over the issue.

“You don’t traumatize a child who loves to go to school, who wanted to be early every day to school, you don’t make him cry, just for wishing someone Merry Christmas,” she told reporters, holding back tears. “You just don’t do it.”

Reporters spoke with Mr. Horner as he was leaving from school on Tuesday. “I warned the children not to bring religion into my classroom,” Horner said. “Maybe he’ll [Tim] listen to adults next time.”

Argon Elementary School officials declined to comment.

    • I do not understand how a “teacher” who works with children on a daily basis does not have the understanding to know that the child was giving him a compliment by being nice. If the grown man who was this boy’s teacher is so uptight about being wished a Merry Christmas I would not want him around my child. To my opinion it hinders the right of the child to express himself. I am pagan and I say Merry Christmas to people and I don’t mind being told merry christmas, happy hannukah, Blessed Yule, Happy Holidays….it’s just nice for someone to wish me well.

    • This never happened. The article is a spoof originally published on the satirical website NationalReport.net on December 11, 2013. From National Report’s disclaimer page: “All news articles contained within National Report are fiction, and presumably fake news. Any resemblance to the truth is purely coincidental.”

Paul Horner, the supposed “outspoken atheist” teacher mentioned in the article, is actually a writer for National Report and more than likely authored the piece himself.

There is no “Anon Elementary School” in San Francisco, where the incident purportedly happened, An early version of the article used the name “Argon Elementary School,” which also doesn’t exist but is close enough to that of a real San Francisco school, Argonne Elementary, that administrators of the latter received a flood of phone complaints, “email tirades,” and “veiled threats of violence” from Internet users who believed the satirical article was true.

If the teacher claims his atheism, that is on him. But, he must be feeling some type of way because technically the youngster said Merry Christmas not Happy To Serve the LORD.
There has to be more the story and I from the action that was taken by the teacher and the principal, I believe the adults have the problem.
Christmas is word that includes the names Christ and Chris which all around the world it is spelled Christmas but pronounced Chrismas.
Atheism, Fakeism should be more the practice. It seems as though he cannot remain neutral when it comes to educating the kids, therefore, he should be suspended indefinitely.

Here in Canada your still allowed to say that, and the teacher can say all he or she wants and the student doesnt get penalized!

The teacher chose to be employed in a sector which houses many religions all in one spot so they got to deal with the consequences of their actions. The only thing our teachers do not need to tolerate up here are religious items like the Janbiya as it is a safety issue (understandably though).

This boy would not have received a single day of suspension or even a mark on his school record up here, but because he is down in the USA that stupid suspension will follow him into College or University!

Also the writer uses the name “Paul Horner” in about bunch of his articles. Click the source for the article and on that page search the teacher’s name. You find him listed as a teacher of other schools in other states, a worker for the american civil liberties union, and also a police detective talking about the “knockout” game. None of it is real.

      Dear Argonne School Community,

I am writing to inform you that a news story was published stating that a fourth grade student from Argon Elementary in San Francisco was suspended for saying “Merry Christmas” to a teacher. The incident did not occur at our school, Argonne Elementary or any school in the San Francisco Unified School District.

Thank you for continuing to support our school community.

    • Am I missing something here or are you all? It says this post is satire at the beginning of the article. This didn’t actually happen. I would also like to point out that it is very poorly executed satire as it’s intended audience hardly recognized it as such even with an explicit warning saying so, there was little to no irony-just a stab at a minority group of atheists, and no underlying poignant truth was brought into view through the derision of widely accepted cultural norms. The author just had to make up a fake story using atheists as a scapegoat to further the false impression that Christmas is somehow under attack so the conservatives who read articles like these will feel as if they have something about which to be angry, because by god a conservative can’t be happy unless their values are under attack. Give the people what they want! Throw all the atheist teachers under a bus and let’s boycott the pretend war on Christmas!

  7. I would go in and file a civil suit, and demand an arrest warrant for deprivation of rights under color of law. That teacher just deprived that kid his free speech rights. I would not ask, I would not ask, I would file the papers myself in Federal court and demand his arrest.
Title 18, U.S.C, Section 242 Deprivation Of Rights Under Color Of Law
Makes it a crime for a person acting under color of any law to willfully deprive a person of a right or privilege protected by the Constitution or laws of the United States. For the purpose of Section 242, acts under “color of law” include acts not only done by federal, state, or local officials within the their lawful authority, but also acts done beyond the bounds of that official’s lawful authority, if the acts are done while the official is purporting to or pretending to act in the performance of his/her official duties. Persons acting under color of law within the meaning of this statute include police officers, prisons guards and other law enforcement officials, as well as judges, care providers in public health facilities, and others who are acting as public officials. It is not necessary that the crime be motivated by animus toward the race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status or national origin of the victim.
If this is not a conspiracy to threaten, or intimidate Under Title 18, U.S.C., Section 241 Conspiracy Against Rights and/or Deprivation Of Rights Under Color Of Law Title 18, U.S.C., Section 242 by public officials acting under color of law… Then what is it?
The school admins are guilty of a conspiracy to deprive his rights by going along with the teacher…
Title 18, U.S.C., Section 241 Conspiracy Against Rights
This statute makes it unlawful for two or more persons to conspire to injure, oppress, threaten, or intimidate any person of any state, territory or district in the free exercise or enjoyment of any right or privilege secured to him/her by the Constitution or the laws of the United States, (or because of his/her having exercised the same). It further makes it unlawful for two or more persons to go in disguise on the highway or on the premises of another with the intent to prevent or hinder his/her free exercise or enjoyment of any rights so secured. Punishment varies from a fine or imprisonment of up to ten years, or both; and if death results, or if such acts include kidnapping or an attempt to kidnap, aggravated sexual abuse or an attempt to commit aggravated sexual abuse, or an attempt to kill, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned for any term of years, or for life, or may be sentenced to death.

Note: It is any Right… and free speech is a right!

Obviously that teacher is cold and heartless.. Please pray for the teacher to have a change of heart…

  25. This is totally uncalled for! Especially to a child! An elementary level kids should not have to be berated for wishing someone a ‘merry christmas’! Kids do not, in my opinion, equate religion with Christmas. They are thinking for Santa Clause and being good to everyone. Tis the shame how ridiculous these school teacher, school board and the principal of our modern education is really setting bad example of how to be ‘human’! With Love, Compassion and Humble to those around us. All parents may consider to home school their kids!

At first, the Teacher should be re-trained in sensitivity while the teacher and the principal should apologize to the kid for their own negative views.

  27. This is absolutely ridiculous. Whatever happened to the US Constitution and the right to believe what you want to believe? I believe the parent/parents should sue the teacher for infringing upon their child’s right to freedom of speech. With that in mind anybody who takes a merry message no matter WHAT it is that personal because of personal beliefs needs to do some thinking. This child in no way endangered anybody with what he said. All he was doing was spreading Christ-mas Joy. You can’t put laws on the freedom of speech. I suggest that the family take a look at this link here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Bill_of_Rights#First_Amendment and take a look at the definition of abridged linked here. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/abridge

  29. Poor Mr. Paul Horner! An innocent, loving little boy said Merry Christmas to you. And with your arrogance and self-righteousness you had this boy suspended. Bad behavior is more tolerated in schools today because schools fear the rights of these children. And yet a student gets sent home, who is probably a role model for other children to follow. Oh, how offended you must have felt Mr. Horner that you traumatized and abused this little boy and took away his right to express himself in a joyful way. This little boy was only expressing good will to you and you had him severely punished for that. You are worst than Mr. Scrooge, who actually comes around in the end of his journey. I suppose atheists think we shouldn’t have Christmas movies, show, songs, etc. What are atheists so afraid of that they have to make such a fuss over another person’s beliefs. I agree Mr. Horner should be suspended from preventing this student’s right to free speech. In conclusion, I hope this little boy doesn’t listen to adults like you. But unfortunately, you’re his teacher. How sad and pathetic.

  35. his smells like a hoax! There is a link to CNN in the article but if you go and search CNN

you will not find the story anywhere. A search of the web shows the story only posted on

random mostly conservative blogs. I even searched the local news nothing.

I tracked it to the website which published this article it is the satirical National

Report. The fictional story tells of a student who offended his atheist teacher by saying

    “Merry Christmas.”

National Report has a disclaimer which clearly states that the website produces satirical

content. The disclaimer – which has been removed on at least one occasion – reads:

*DISCLAIMER: National Report is a news and political satire web publication, which may or

may not use real names, often in semi-real or mostly fictitious ways. All news articles

contained within National Report are fiction, and presumably fake news. Any resemblance to

the truth is purely coincidental . The views expressed by writers on this site are theirs

alone and are not reflective of the fine journalistic and editorial integrity of National

Report. Advice given is NOT to be construed as professional. If you are in need of

professional help (and you may be if you are on this page), please consult a professional.

National Report is intended for a mature audience and not for children under the age of 18.

    http://nationalreport.net/disclaimer/

Further proof of the article’s fictitious nature is the school named in the article. The

story cites “Argon Elementary School” in San Francisco. This appears to be a variation of a

real school there by the name of Argonne Elementary.

The photo used in the story included a caption which read, “Outside Argon Elementary school

where the war on Christmas was declared.” The image is actually a snapshot of Parr’s Ridge

    Elementary School in Maryland. http://www.carrollk12.org/par/

An email address for the “teacher” is included at the end of the article, which prompts

angry readers to write in to wish him a Merry Christmas. I suspect this address was probably

set up to either track the popularity of the fake article, or to collect email addresses of

    readers.

    Bottom Line
A 9-year old was not suspended for saying “Merry Christmas” to his teacher. The story was

    published by a satirical website.

They can’t put anything on the web thats not true! Right?? lol

  40. This story just doesn’t seem true… Sorry to whoever posted it and to those who have already commented, but this story really just seems false– like someone made it up just to rile people up. Suspended for saying Merry Christmas? Come on. Even if a teacher did want officials to suspend the kid, the teacher alone does not have authority for the suspension. This means that multiple school officials would have had to agree that the kid warranted a suspension. It also means that the teacher was forcing his own beliefs on the students, which most schools usually take issue with because of the problems such practices can cause with parents.

So, some key aspects are definitely missing from this story, or it just isn’t true at all.

I wouldn’t want an athiest teaching my child, especially if he was pushing his religious beliefs on my child. Athiesm is a religious belief, too. So the athiest teacher was rewarded for forcing his religious beliefs onto the kids, while this little boy was punished for his beliefs. If the athiest’s “freedom of religion” was protected, why wasn’t the child’s freedom protected? We are guaranteed “freedom OF religion,” not “freedom FROM religion.” MERRY CHRISTMAS, everybody!

  66. Maybe the teacher should take his own words into his own action. He told the children not to bring religion into his class room yet he was doing just that. He brought his own religion into the class room. I have a serious problem with the teachers and Board of Education sticking together like they do, protecting themselves at the expense of the children and the exact thing they are suppose to be doing and that is teaching the kids. If the teacher doesn’t want what most kids at this time of year to say or have anything mentioned about Christmas then he needs to take off this time of year or leave the profession. Why is he teaching kids this age any way knowing they believe in Santa and things like that, much less it’s a regular saying amongst children and adults alike this time of year. What would he have done if he worked for someone else and a customer had said Merry Christmas to him on the business floor, would he have cussed them out? I believe the Principle should be held responsible for the actions taken also, I can not imagine that this is in the School Handbook of punishable things and what is the punishment behind it. They should both be fired!

If a child of another faith (or none at all) wished me a blessing, good health, Happy Kwanza, Ramadan, or Happy Birthday, I would not do this to them. As a former principal, I would have just talked to the child who was referred to me and told him that his teacher did not believe in that. A suspension of a week should be reserved for something serious like fighting, bullying, and so forth. The spontaneous happiness of a child should not be discouraged. As for the school if they are displaying Christmas theme they are resposible for this. Is the administration being suspended for it also. To do that to a child and take somthing and try to make it bad is wrong. Intoday world these children need to bliv in something. If that teachr who is suppose to be a grown up can not deal with a Merry Christmas thn maybe h should excuse his self during that tim. It is not a case of a child not listning to an adult, it is cas of an adult acting like a child. his cowboy attitud of it is my class and I controll what happens here is so wrong. Why should the childs right be infringe on just because he doesn’t believe. Hopefully he will not have deep rooted issue from this and one day get a gun and take out people in the school because he was bullied by the teacher. Same on this school for letting it happen. if there are any Lawyers out there please make this a test case and handle it Pro Bouno and send this school a message kids have rights also.

One of the major reasons I am homeschooling my son, is so that we can say Merry Christmas to everyone the flip we want. We also pray out loud at restaurants. I don’t care if it offends anyone. Athiests offend me.
MERRY CHRISTMAS, PAUL HORNER. MERRY CHRISTMAS, MERRY CHRISTMAS, MERRY CHRISTMAS, MERRY CHRISTMAS. You should be ashamed of yourself

There is no need in over reacting like that especially to a kid. To each his own but there is a difference in defending what u choose or not to choose to believe in and being a straight up asshole.

You are 35, acting like a 10 year old with a chip on his shoulder ready to slam anyone who disagrees with you. Your student did not come in to oppose you but rather he spoke an act of kindness to you.
You could of said very politely said “thank you.” Your need to exert unnecessary control over a nine year old is completely distasteful!

I think this is morally wrong, hes just a child, and wanted to be jolly on a good day that had no harm. The teacher needs to shove his ego, and be suspended for being so “offensive”. All these people who say we are offending them tend to forget they are just as guilty if not more because they are doing the very thing they are protesting against. If you don’t want to hear it … don’t listen. By not allowing children to outwardly believe in God or to express kindness and well wishes , they are taking away the child’s rights. It has become a one way street. Our government has allowed Atheists to get everything they want by taking away the rights of others. Where is that fair and just. If you don’t believe that is on your head. So don’t punish those who do by trying to squash our voice as well…you will fail in that. We will still be heard . If you don’t want to hear it….COVER YOUR EARS!

Other parents in the class should request a transfer out of her class if refused boycott her. 198. In the United States of America our Constitution gives us the right of Freedom of Speach. It may not give a student the right to call someone by a vulgar or offensive name, though they seem to very often do that even on multimedia. It may not give us the right of prayer in the schools because that was legally taken out by another person that did not believe in God. However, saying Merry Christmas whether it was being pushy because he knew the teacher was an atheist or whether he was just being sweet and wishing the teacher a beautiful Christmas time… as so far not been removed from our schools by legal action. Any teacher that would condemn a child of 9 for whatever his motives, really should not be teaching my child as I see it. Thank you would have been sufficient… and let it roll off his adult back. The man has some serious issues. Sarcasm could have been dealt with differently… if it were that. This starts Christians to hating and that makes the atheist plan work. Sadly. Sometimes I wish we could just divide.. allow those that wish to worship or not.. in different religions etc. to do so… but not together. Seems like God separates a lot of men… those that hate… really need him more than those who have Jesus in their heart. MERRY CHRISTMAS to the Christians that read this.

  212. This teacher should not be allowed to work with students if he gets so offended by a child wishing him a merry Christmas. He sounds very immature. I have had over 400 clients wish me a merry Christmas including children. It’s the holidays what do you expect? You need to respect people’s beliefs, and not make the person feel they are doing the wrong thing. Besides I’m sure that teacher does not mind taking his Christmas vacation.

This country was formed on religion. I say Merry Christmas to everyone. She is entitled to her lack of religion just as I am entitled to my Christianity. A simple response from her could have been “happy holidays.” Shame on Mr. Horner, I will pray for you everyday as that is the Christian thing to do. Shame on the principal of the school as we’ll for suspending that little boy. I am sick and tired of people trying to remove religion from society. I am offended that this child’s First Amendment Right to Freedom of Speech has been violated. Christmas is about the celebration of Jesus’ birth, you Mr. Horner, wouldn’t be here if not for the birth of Jesus. I say again, SHAME ON YOU.

My question would be this….”is there a current policy in writing, in the student handbook that states, “religion may not be brought into Mr. Horner’s classroom?” I would venture to say No! There is probably not a policy at all, even in general. Furthermore, if a child is expected to “accept” the fact that the “well rounded Mr. Horner” is an, and I quote, “out spoken Atheist”, the least he can do is respect the individual choices his students make. Finally, punishing a child for expressing cheer, even when it is centered around a religious holiday, will come back to bite this, probably short term teacher, on the rump! MERRY CHRISTMAS AND GOD BLESS

  250. The teacher was an atheist….but so what! I doubt the boy was saying Merry Christmas as a religious statement! It’s a traditional holiday greeting/goodbye this time of year for the majority of the country we live in. He could have easily taken the kid aside and explained to him that he doesn’t celibate Christmas and to please not wish him a Merry one.

Christmas is more about being with family and friends now a days then religion. At least it is for me and my family. We were never a religious family but still loved the giving spirit of the season.

If your religious don’t push your religion on others, but the same goes for Atheists as well, don’t push your non belief on others that do believe. I’m surprised the principal went along with a suspension or any type of punishment at all in this case! It’s ridiculous! I would have looked at the guy and told him to put on his big boy panties…it was just a kid wishing you a good day using a traditional holiday method.

Not only that, but as an atheist he should know the actual history of “Christmas” and how it’s not even a truly “religious” holiday, but a celebration of the winter solstice. We got many of the traditions straight from the pagans.

  266. This country used to be based on moral character and family values. Our society has evolved into what it is today because of people like this teacher. I know we live in a country where we try to respect everybody else’s rights but this is bs. I have a five year old daughter that I am trying to bring up in this bleak society that is being created by people like this MORON. Yes, I am a God fearing man. We are right now living in the present version of Sodom and Gomorrah and at the same time, witnessing the punishment for this everyday in bringing the Wrath down on ourselves. Overly religious people would say God is doing it to us but I believe He is sitting up there right now with His arms crossed, shaking His head as we destroy ourselves. This country was founded by men and women who had a faith in God. They saw a purpose to separating the church and the government. You know as well as I do our founding fathers are turning over in their graves because of the extreme ways we have chosen to bend the words they wrote into our own interpretation. We know what they meant in the words they wrote. The Constitution was written by God fearing men who also never would have allowed an atheist to teach their children. Try to take the Ten Commandments away and the least that would happen would have been being chastised and run out of town. I want to live in a society where my daughter can play outside without me standing guard near her, as a whole believe in the Golden Rule, etc, etc, etc. People like this MORON are a part our downfall and it will continue until we either do something about it or just stand by and allow it to happen, which is what we are doing as a country
By the way, Merry Christmas everyone. Yes, that does include the MORON too! I will say a prayer for you during my celebration of the birth of OUR Christ, The Lord Jesus……

    Post a Reply
  285. Suspending a student appears on a college application too. Merry Christmas is a common term which implies happy holidays to most people. A fourth grade boy, regardless of his intentions (good or bad) should not be held responsible for causing an injury here. Atheism is considered a religion too so by punishing christianity because of atheism we are choosing one belief over another which goes against our freedom of religion. Secondly, an injury should be present for the staff to justify this suspension. A butthurt asshole in his feelings cus someone wished him a merry christmas doesn’t validate an injury. The teacher wanted to make a point but this type of discipline in the school system is not proportionate to what adults face in the real world; it is an excessive amount of school system power. I hope this becomes a court case and that teacher gets replaced because as legalistic as some of us may be, I being one of those people, this type of behavior by our children’s role models cannot and must not be tolerated.

  287. No. This, this is bullshit. Pardon my language, but that’s what it is. Wishing someone a Merry Christmas should not be a punishable offense. Whether the kid knew the religious meaning or not, it’s a holiday, just like Halloween or the start of a new year. Just because you don’t agree with a religion doesn’t mean you can traumatize a poor kid. The Christmas spirit doesn’t even have to be limited to Christian denominations. It’s about peace and good will toward ALL man. It’s about unity and hope for a better tomorrow. This man should be fired and the entire administrative staff punished for this. He wasn’t “bringing religion into the classroom” by wishing his teacher a Merry Christmas. He wasn’t preaching the gospel or shoving his beliefs in anyone’s face. He did nothing that should’ve offended anyone. This kind of behavior is what’s offensive. Would I be offended at someone offering me a “Happy Holidays”? No. If a Jewish person said to me “Happy Hanukkah” I would not take offense to it. That’s what they celebrate so I would wish them the same. And that’s what we SHOULD do. Live and let live and let others believe as they feel is right. If the teacher didn’t want religion in his classroom he should have refused to even teach children who believed differently than him, and as such should not have been teaching in the first place. This kind of stuff just really bothers me. It never ceases to amaze me how low some people will go to prove a point and how utterly childish some “adults” and supposed “authority figures” can be.

You clearly have a little boy who cares enough to extend this sentiment to a teacher, who obviously doesn’t deserve it, and you punish his productive friendly behavior. Most children don’t even associate Christmas with “religion.” The instructor is an idiot and the school that enabled him are in the wrong. 329. Detailed Analysis

According to a report that is circulating via social media and being posted to various politically orientated blogs and forums, Timothy Dawson, a 9-year-old boy at a San Francisco elementary school was suspended because he wished Paul Horner, his atheist teacher a Merry Christmas. Supposedly, the teacher was offended by the boy’s Christmas greeting and arranged to have him suspended for the rest of the week as a punishment. The report describes the incident as part of the ongoing “war on Christmas”.

However, the claims in the message are nonsense. No such incident occurred and the story is fictional. Although it has now been posted far and wide, the story originates on the satirical pseudo-news website National Report. All articles published on the site are fictional. A disclaimer on the site notes:

*DISCLAIMER: National Report is a news and political satire web publication, which may or may not use real names, often in semi-real or mostly fictitious ways. All news articles contained within National Report are fiction, and presumably fake news. Any resemblance to the truth is purely coincidental.

Unfortunately, this silly hoax has caused real problems for a real school. The fake news story originally referred to the “Argon Elementary School”, close enough to San Francisco’s “Argonne Elementary School” for false assumptions to be made. To alleviate concern and confusion, the school was forced to publish the following notice on its website:

    Dear Argonne School Community,

I am writing to inform you that a news story was published stating that a fourth grade student from Argon Elementary in San Francisco was suspended for saying “Merry Christmas” to a teacher. The incident did not occur at our school, Argonne Elementary or any school in the San Francisco Unified School District.

Thank you for continuing to support our school community.

    Warm regards,
Cami Okubo Principal at Argonne Elementary

The National Report article has since changed the name of the school it mentions to “Anon Elementary School”. But, alas, the damage is already done.

National Report has been responsible for churning out a series of false and fanciful stories in recent months that have managed to cause a good deal of angst and consternation as they travel. The site’s articles are presented as news and many readers tend to believe the information they contain. Especially when the articles escape the confines of their original satirical context.

Paul Horner, the supposed atheist teacher, has featured in other fictional National report stories. He was supposedly the first man to marry an animal in a “State Recognized Human-Animal Marriage”. And, in another article, a man of the same name won an award for having a very large appendage.
While satirical stories such as the above school suspension tale have their place and can be entertaining, it is rather sad that so many people seem so willing to use such obviously fictional pieces to promote their own political and religious agendas, including the mythical “war on Christmas”.

  330. That is really sad. The child should not have a suspension on his record for that. He did not cuss out the teacher or strike the teacher. This is flat out bulling by the teacher just because you don’t like the phrase doesn’t mean the child should be suspended. We all hear things we don’t like but we get over and keep going. This teacher should not be a teacher and the principle should be investigated. The parents should get a lawyer to look into the school system and protecting their child from this. The punishment does not even make sense and seems a little over broad. An as far as this teacher goes if he can’t respect all the beliefs of the children then he should be dismissed. So to the principle of Argon Elementary and especially to Mr. Horner, Merry Christmas. An guess what Mr. Horner there is not a thing you can do about it.

  359. This is an example of the pendulum swinging too far the other way, and only helps to vilify atheists. I don’t believe in god, but have no problem whatsoever with the phrase “Merry Christmas” – I say it myself all the time during the holidays. Although it contains the word “Christ”, most rational and reasonable non-believers can associate the phrase with joy, love, and family (even trees, reindeer and Santa) during the holidays, and know that when someone wishes them a Merry Christmas, they are doing it to be kind, and spread a little holiday cheer (rather than trying to convert them to Christianity).

While I do agree that exclusively Christian religious teachings have no place in a publicly-funded school, the phrase “Merry Christmas” has no shortage of secular connotations, and should therefore not be judged as “religion in the classroom”.

This teacher/Grinch needs to relax (and perhaps let his heart grow three sizes!) The school should take a good hard look at its policies.

Merry Christmas to everyone, and a very special Merry Christmas to Timothy Dawson and his family.

  360. Perhaps Mr Horner should be suspended without pay. It’s his choice and right to not believe in God, however he needs to keep one thing in mind before doing something like this again especially over such and harmless gesture by such an innocent little boy. Every single piece of currency he spends, every penny, quarter, dollar he spends brings religion in every transaction he completes as In God We Trust is on all of it. Maybe Mr Horney should think about that the next time he wants to make a point!

People who clearly don’t appreciate children have no business teaching them. And this one clearly does little teaching. I don’t celebrate Christmas myself, but could not careless if someone wishes me a Merry Christmas. 404. This coming from a supposed adult?? Man up! This is an innocent child and you do not punish a child for saying Merry Christmas! And by the way…I hate to break it you to dude but that is NOT “your” classroom. That is the state’s classroom, paid for by the people of the state that pay taxes. So, no, it’s really not your classroom and you really have no say in the matter…at least that’s how it’s been said before. If you want more control over the class then leave that school and go to a private school for atheists.

May the CHRIST of CHRISTmas bring peace to you and your family this year as you deal with this unfortunate circumstance. Please know Timothy that you did nothing wrong. 409. Well the teacher brought his religion in the classroom when he had the child suspended so where is his suspension for a week without pay. If you are offended by some one else religion and express it so then you are bringing your into the subject as well. If you believe or don’t believe doesn’t give you the right to bully anyone into thinking they should believe like you do. You have a right to die and go to hell if you want to. or not.

Not sure what his point is and he needs to learn to keep his thoughts to himself and not bully a 9 year old student. That supension is ridiculous in my opinion.

  421. I do remember that we ALL ( even 9 yr old children ) still have the right of Freedom of Speach ! Isn’t that what our military men & women fight for. If this man is a teacher, then he should know this and be more respectful of this child’s rights. And on another note, adults do not always know everything. It is our job as humans to continue to learn, even if that means a so called adult learning from a child. Christmas is not just a Christian holiday is for everyone. It about God giving the most priceless gift to mankind that could ever be given. The teacher was just being immature ( childish ) trying to get his way.

  424. Paul Horner Has Brought religion in his class room all by himself. Atheism is a religion in it self according to definition of Religion. Religion is an organized collection of beliefs, cultural systems, and world views that relate humanity to an order of existence.[note 1] Many religions have narratives, symbols, and sacred histories that are intended to explain the meaning of life and/or to explain the origin of life or the Universe. From their beliefs about the cosmos and human nature, people derive morality, ethics, religious laws or a preferred lifestyle. According to some estimates, there are roughly 4,200 religions in the world.[1]
Many religions may have organized behaviors, clergy, a definition of what constitutes adherence or membership, holy places, and scriptures. The practice of a religion may also include rituals, sermons, commemoration or veneration of a deity, gods or goddesses, sacrifices, festivals, feasts, trance, initiations, funerary services, matrimonial services, meditation, prayer, music, art, dance, public service or other aspects of human culture. Religions may also contain mythology.[2]
The word religion is sometimes used interchangeably with faith, belief system or sometimes set of duties;[3] however, in the words of Émile Durkheim, religion differs from private belief in that it is “something eminently social”.[4] A global 2012 poll reports that 59% of the world’s population is religious, and 36% are not religious, including 13% who are atheists, with a 9 percent decrease in religious belief from 2005.[5] On average, women are more religious than men.[6] Some people follow multiple religions or multiple religious principles at the same time, regardless of whether or not the religious principles they follow traditionally allow for syncretism. ” Interchangeably with faith, belief system”

Atheism is a belief that other Christian beliefs are untrue! In itself is a religion ! so Merry Christmas to all and to non believers Happy christmas small c indicates Christ is not a savior just a time of year!

We live in America where we have the FREEDOM OF SPEECH, if you don’t like it then maybe he shouldn’t be a teacher at all, it’s bad enough most schools are taking out the Pledge of Allegiance because it has the word GOD in it, again we live in America, we have our religion and others have theirs we have welcomed other races and religions into our country and this is how they repay us, maybe we should not be so lenient anymore. The Principal should be suspended. That’s completely ridiculous to suspend a kid over wishing his teacher a Merry Christmas! Talk to the kid, sure. Tell him he needs to be more sensitive to those who don’t celebrate “Christmas” and explain that they have a right to their own beliefs. Maybe make him give a formal apology to the teacher for “religious insensitivity”. Maybe make him write a paper on “religious sensitivity” and why it’s important to respect the beliefs of others. But a week suspension is taking it WAY too far!

  479. It is constitutional for public schools to ban teachers and students from saying “Merry Christmas.” Fact: The Supreme Court has stated that teachers and students do not “shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate.” Guidelines issued by U.S. Secretary of Education Richard Riley (who served under President Clinton) state “students therefore have the same right to engage in…religious discussion during the school day as they do to engage in other comparable activity.” Teachers have the right to greet students with the words “Merry Christmas,” in spite of their role as agents of the state. Saying a simple greeting that people commonly use in December does not violate the Establishment Clause

We are going so far to make sure some have rights and others do not. We all must be able to have our own beliefs! The teacher should respect the student as the student respects the teacher. What, because he’s not voting age he doesn’t count? We have bullies in the schools who get a slap on the wrist or cause another child’s suicide. They don’t get NEAR the punishment this child did. But because his parents raised him to believe in santa and try to spread Christmas cheer, HE gets suspended. Where was the school’s officials heads when they agreed to this? Oh, there it is….straight up their asses….the TEACHER ought to have his address published so people like me, who believe in Christmas, can “suspend” him…by his toes from the nearest tree.

This teacher is a disgrace to the teaching profession – maybe the kid should have told him off instead – this school board is pathetic for suspending a young child and wasting tax payers money . Hey. Mr Horner Merry Christmas – what you going to do me suspend me as well Absolutely pathetic. We teach our children to be polite to others and this so called Adult has the balls to suspend a child for what I ask – Saying ” Merry Christmas” – really – has society sunk this low that an innocent child gets punished for saying something so innocent – Pathetic and disgraceful representation of an adult (very scary if we have stupid people like this in our school system teaching our children)

Oh yes and MERRY CHRISTMAS MR. HORNER

  501. You did bring religion into the classroom by professing your atheism! Christians are allowed no rights anymore. We have to be PC and try our hardest not to offend anyone and therefore we have to hold back our feelings involving our religious beliefs. But NO ONE else does. We have to accept everyone for who they are but NO ONE takes the time to accept us. We aren’t allowed to step on anyone’s toes, but EVERYONE steps on ours, and we are not ALLOWED to be offended by it. EVERYONE else can scream far and loud about how they are right and we are wrong, but God forbid if we do the same. Shame on the teacher, the principle, and everyone else who allowed this. If it were someone expressing something from any other religion besides Christianity, you wouldn’t be seeing this happen, and if it did, the world would be in an uproar over it.

  528. It’s says it’s satire right from the get-go. Even if it wasn’t then you’re still a bunch of idiots. Religious people (Christians in this case) immediately get defensive and all “hell” breaks loose for something that’s not true. Christmas isn’t even a Christian holiday ORIGINALLY. It was taken from the Pagans. “Jesus” wasn’t even born in December. The whole story of this religion was stolen from another mythological story from 100′s of years before. Kings and other influential people from that time used that and the popular Pagan holidays to promote Christianity. For what? To control the ignorant and poor with fear.

Where in ANY school district rule book, State Legislature, or United States Government document does it state that it is a punishable offense to wish someone a Merry Christmas?? WHERE??? If I was that Mother, I would slap a lawsuit on that teacher, the school, and the school district so fast, their heads would spin! Thanks to this man who calls himself a teacher, he has probably scarred this young child for the rest of his life! This country was founded on the morals and beliefs of God, how dare this man and his staff call themselves Americans! We are One Nation, UNDER GOD and if you don’t like that or believe in it, MOVE AWAY!! I am so sick and tired of people not being able to express themselves in a religious sense because it might offend someone! What about the fact that you who do not believe OFFEND ME??? All of the “non-believing” people have a right to express how they feel, when they are offended, why can’t we? Freedom of Speech gives this child and every body else the right to say Merry Christmas whenever and to whomever they so wish, this teacher and the Admins at this school should be fired and then they can all go somewhere where their freedoms and liberties aren’t so free and be Atheists all they want!!

  563. To me, I find the teacher’s pushing Aethism on a child to the point of suspension, followed up by the reinforcement of “maybe next time he’ll listen to adults” is far more infringing on the child’s religious (treating Aethists as a (anti-)religious group) beliefs with the teacher’s own Beliefs in God (believing that God is not real). In this view, the teacher has already brought the topic of religion in by saying keep it out.
On another hand, these days, Chirstmas is more about commercialism than religion. So far this season, this article has been the first reference to religion that I have seen tied to Christmas. The hustle and bustle in shopping centers filled with rude rushed people simply reinforces that this is a commercialized holiday rather than its original Christian beginning.

  564. It seems the teacher believes it is very appropriate to force his religious beliefs on the students but bans any reference to the students religious beliefs. 596. Truly astounding. Why is it that other staff did not stand up for this little boy. That school needs to give its collective head a shake.

  598. first of all everyone has there on beliefs but there should not be an atheist working with small children. ecspecially an outspoken one. people say they don’t won’t our God and religion in schools well we definitely don’t want Satan there either. Tim keep your head up and don’t let this man ruin your CHRISTMAS spirit. merry Christmas to you and your family. god bless you all. the teacher should definitely be arrested for child abuse. if it was us our kids would be taken away by the state. keep pushing toward until justice is done.

  600. It should be the teacher fired, not suspended, and the boy should have been left alone. The boy did nothing wrong, all this government crap about not being allowed to express Christmas spirit to the public due to other religions, is just ridiculous! I am an Atheist and I happily celebrate Christmas every year. Christmas is not about religion any more, it is about spending time with the ones you love and just enjoying life. Even if you were to say Merry Christmas, or Happy Holidays to someone who does not celebrate Christmas, it is just the common courtesy to those around you, it never means any thing bad.
